this is kpix5 news on the cw. >> the man hunt is over and now we're getting our first look at the moment when the second marathon bombing suspect was caught. >> justice is being served for the victims of these terrible crimes. >> the tip that led police right to him. the changes in the older brother that everyone noticed. and why he was on the fbi's radar two years ago. good evening, i'm juliette goodrich. >> and i'm ken bastida. a week of terror is finally over. tonight the second marathon bombing suspect is in custody. this photo from moments after he was captured gives us a good idea of what a messed up state he was in. police found the 19-year-old bloodied and hiding in a boat in watertown outside of boston. a tip led police to the

suspect, bringing a 24 hour man hunt that locked down the city to an end. let's get right to vanita who is in watertown just outside of boston tonight. >> reporter: the 19-year-old bombing suspect is in the hospital at this hour listed in serious condition. he was apprehended after a massive five-day man hunt. a crowd cheered when they heard the suspected boston marathon bomber had been captured. minutes later, an ambulance carrying dzhozkar tsarnaev made its way out of a watertown, massachusetts, neighborhood, ending 24 hours of terror in this boston suburb. he was injured from a boat parked in a driveway. >> the citizens of the city of washington can be confident that the threat has been removed. >> the break in the case came friday evening when a homeowner noticed blood on the boat's protective cover and called

911. law enforcement sources say they exchanged gunfire with the suspect. a neighbor caught the fire fight on video. >> ultimately, the hostage rescue team of the fbi made an entry into the boat and removed the suspect of who was still alive in the boat. >> the standoff came 24 hours after dzhokhar and his older brother killed an officer. that led to a fierce fire fight with police in watertown that killed tamerlan and may have injured his brother. it has been a long day for the people here in watertown and in the greater boston area. the search for the brothers closed schools and offices and all but shut down the entire area. president obama expressed his thanks from the white house. >> we owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to all our outstanding law enforcement professionals. >> reporter: the fbi marked

his page, captured, and people gathered for a candle light vigil near the finish line of the marathon. in addition to a motive. investigators will be looking to answer if these two brothers were working alone or part of a larger terror group. we can tell you that three additional suspects have been taken into custody. it happened in new bedford, which is an hour away from watertown where this all played out. back to you. >> now the man hunt ended about 27 hours after the fbi released the suspect's photos. here's a closer look at the night of chaos that led up to the capture. >> the chaos began late last night, police called to a shooting on the m.i.t. campus. university police officer, sean collier was ambushed and killed. at 11:30 boston time, the brothers carjacked a man a few blocks away in cambridge.

they told the driver they were the marathon bombers. a half hour later, they released the man unharmed where surveillance camera captured this image of dzhokhar. police caught up with the police, then a running gun battle. explosives thrown from the car. >> they have explosives. some type of grenades. they are inbetween houses down here. >> then, it got worse. police say tamerlan approached them with a pressure cooker bomb, but it malfunctioned. >> in all, more than 200 rounds of ammunition were exchanged. officer richard donahue was shot and critically wounded. tamerlan tsarnaev, dead. he ran over his older brother's body as he sped away. at 4:30 a.m., people in eastern watertown were ordered to stay

in their homes. by 8:00 a.m., the order expanded to include all of boston. meanwhile, bomb squads blew up suspicious packages found in the brother's apartment. officers went door to door all day looking for dzhokhar. a man in this watertown house spotted him hiding out in his boat and called 911. then, around 9:00, cheering in the streets as the mayor of boston tweeted, we got him. >> and we learn tonight the two brothers are chechen. they came to the u.s. several years ago. both registered to study at american universitie >> why did young men who grew up and studied here as part of our communities and our country, resort to such violence? >> many of those who knew the brothers told reporters they are shocked to learn who the suspects are and they can't believe that they would do

something like this. kpix5's joe vazquez tells us what he found out about these two individuals, the brothers. joe. >> cbs news is finding out is that the fbi met with the older brother, tamerlan, in 2011. an unnamed foreign government contacted the u.s. and said they were worried about tamerlan's contact with extremist elements. the fbi determined he was not a threat. how little they knew about both brothers. >> crazy how you can know someone and you never know what they are planning. >> 19-year-old dzhozkar tsarnaev, now known as suspect number two, or white hat, came to this country at the age of 7 or 8. he became a u.s. citizen last year on 9/11. he lived in cambridge most of his life. he's a second-year premed student at university of massachusetts. people knew him as sociable and happy go lucky. >> nothing about him would suggest anything like this.

politics, religion, nothing. >> as for his older brother, tamerlan, suspect number one, he is a different story. a golden gloves boxer who once aspired to make the u.s. olympics team. family members and fellow boxers say he had become more radical. >> the first year i met him, he had leather pants and boots. the second time, he had a t- shirt and hoody and jeans. he only spoke about his faith. he was big into religion. >> he started praying five times a day. he told an interviewer, i don't have a single american friend, i don't understand them. he recently began to post youtube videos associated with islamic extremism. the associated press reports tamerlan leaves behind a child with cath rick russell of rhode island. her family released a statement saying they realize now, they never knew him. why in the world would the

brothers bomb a marathon and kill a cop? it's still not clear. we looked on social media for clues and found a tweet from dzhokhar on the night before the marathon, he tweeted quote, eight no love in the heart of the city. stay safe, people. >> so joe, there's a big question out there tonight that is lingering. was this part of a larger conspiracy? was it international terrorism? this guy seems to have some background overseas. >> as a matter of fact, authorities are telling cbs news the older brother spent six months in russia just last year. it's not clear what was he doing there? did he meet other extremists? did he do some kind of training, bomb making, for example, or did they just decide, two brothers, to inflict this horror on a city by themselves? >> yeah, in essence, this is where the real investigation just begins tonight. >> a lot more work to do. >> thank you, joe. no one seemed more

surprised by all of this than those who have known the brothers their whole lives. the family of the two suspects is sharply divided on their guilt. >> again, i say what i think is behind it. big losers. >> i'm suspicious that this was staged. >> kpix5 joins us now. i understand, sharon, the older brother had been calling his relatives in the past few days? >> that's right. in fact, a cousin says the two brothers were very different. the younger a smart and sweet kid. the older, that got into trouble. he repeatedly warned dzhokhar that his older brother was a bad influence. from his home in russia, the suspect's father insists his sons are innocent. he called his younger son a true angel studying medicine. >> someone framed them. i don't know exactly did it,

but someone did. and being cowards, they shot the boy dead. there are cops like this. >> the suspect's aunt in toronto says tamerlan had a wife and a three-year-old child. >> they could not have done this. where's the evidence? >> the uncle calls the two barbarians. he says the two have disgraced their family's roots and wishes they had never lived. >> they put that shame on the entire ethnicity. >> the brother's other uncle in maryland says after a two- year silence, tamerlan called asking for forgiveness. >> when i heard this on the tv. who can do this stuff? it's crazy. it's unbelievable. >> relatives say that the brothers came as political refugees from chechnya with their father to go to school. their father returned overseas. he says he just talked to his

older son the other day. >> he said everything was okay. i even asked him, how is dzhokhar. he would spend more time studying. >> could the bombing have anything to do with a conflict between russia and rebels in the chechen republic? she doesn't think so. >> it's hard to see a direct connection. it's not as though they were sent by some rebel group to blow up bombs at the boston marathon. >> the family has had its share of legal troubles. the older brother had a domestic violence charge that was dismissed three years ago after a jury trial. the mother was arrested in massachusetts last summer, charged with stealing women's clothes and damaging property. >> all right. sharon, thank you. much of boston was a ghost town all day long as the city

joe-carr tsarnaev. the 19 it's unclear when the fbi will be able to question suspected boston bomber, dzhozkar tsarnaev. he was shot and seriously wounded in his efforts to evade capture. police cornered him this evening. he was hiding in a boat behind a watertown home. they used a thermal imaging camera to keep an eye on him.

his brother, tamerlan, was killed overnight in a furious attempt to escape police. the massive man hunt left the entire boston area paralyzed. alyssa harrington shows us boston police learned some of the key tactics they have been using this week right here in the bay area. >> those first responders acted very quickly, very professionally. >> and share of gregory might have something to do with that. for two years, boston sent teams to the bay area for urban shield exercises. an emergency response system he developed. first responders compete and train for high risk events. basically in a disaster, a single agency can get overwelmed. when everyone shows up, s.w.a.t., etcetera, it can complicate communication. urban shield assesses the strength and limitations of each individual agency. then prepares an organized response, forcing people to

work together. boston modeled its own and has been using it since 2010. >> we are proud to know our program has been duplicated in other parts of the country. we are glad it was beneficial to the first responders in boston. >> urban shield exercises are held in the bay area once a year. the next is in october and 30 teens have signed up. they come from as far away as israel. in oakland, kpix5. >> security was tight at the giants game tonight. gates opened two hours before the first pitch. there were mandatory bag checks and for the first time, they used metal detecting wands on every fan. this is the giants first home game since the bombings. >> the search is on for whoever shot and killed two bay area teenagers. brother and sister right outside their richmond home. all signs are pointing to a random attack. don knapp on what police say is even more disturbing.

>> family and friends were gathered here last evening when two young men walked up and began firing at fairly close range. richmond's newest spotter captured the sound. those are the real-time sounds of gun shots that mowed down two young people. 19-year-old, mercedes williams. >> these children, i believe they were innocent. they don't bother anybody. >> at this point, it does not appear these two victims were involved in any criminal activity. >> it was just family members and friends standing outside the house talking. while police say the victims were innocent, the killings are gang related. >> this is the type of activity where we see people in certain areas going into other areas and targeting people just because they live in the area. >> police are seeing younger and younger shooters. >> juveniles are more wild. we are seeing a brazen-type

shootings and attacks involving juveniles. >> death is permanent. i think somebody should get somes. get these kids busy. >> they saw a recent plunge that engage young people. >> we used the cease fire program, which we contacted the people we know that has been involved in gang activity. offered them different routes to change their lives. different paths. >> but a recent surgeon shootings suggest a new flairup. in richmond, don knapp, kpix5. >> those shooters remain at large. they took off in a dark blue vehicle and headed south. >> now kpix5 meet meteorologist is here with a light at the end of the tunnel. >> the news has been the opposite of sunshine, but we have a lot to talk about. we are going to get toasty. some of you up near 90 degrees.

what a gorgeous, comftable evening outside. leave those windows open. we'll have clear skies and you'll start off your weekend around 50 degrees. concorde 51. redwood city 49 degrees. our forecast, each of the coast and half-moon bay, you'll be one of the coolest spots. 61 sunshine, but chilly. milder on sunday, 67. you are likely be in the mid 70s coming up on monday and tuesday. it's all about high pressure and where exactly it is. it's close enough to us to observe the strong influence. rain is not a concern over the next several days. it will hang out just enough offshore to give us the winds from the pacific ocean. keeping san francisco in the city cooler and oakland and much of the area right on bait. cooler than we will be. high pressure moves, gets stronger. we all get the offshore wind.

we're going to see some of the way warmest weather we have seen. how hat? monday through wednesday will be near 90 inla and hit 80 degrees in san francisco. tomorrow will be warm, but about the coolest day of the next five or six. concorde 80. oakland mid 70s. heyward 74. right around 80 degrees for concorde. vallejo 77. look at the peninsula. mid 60s. alameda 71. then we get toasty. warmer on sunday. 88 degrees inland and 80 near the bay. toasty on tuesday and wednesday before we see a cooling trend. we are warm this weekend. we are hot for the top of next week. >> loving it. >> thanks. widget be right back. you kids should count yourselves lucky.

she was 74. it was nice the giants honored her, and of course the city of boston and the tragedy there. madison bumgardener. struck out the 4th and the 5thment wait until you see 9th inning. that was tied at 2. pagan gets through. blanco gets the walkoff and the giants win it. final of 3-2. tropicana in tampa bay. a 2-0 lead. tampa bay rocked it with four runs in the the 1st inning. this is the first road loss of the season. remember that to the warriors in denver. there's practice today.
